Discover Animation Made in France

France is a powerhouse in animation — as evidenced most recently by the success of this year’s animated short film Oscar winner Logorama — and it wants to make sure the movie world knows it.

The promotion organization Film France is currently in Los Angeles to promote France’s animation studios and a new tax rebate designed especially for animation. The organization cites the hiring of French studio McGuff to work on Universal’s upcoming animated feature film Despicable Me as an example of how the rebate can work both financially and creatively.

“There are many places where you can receive 20 percent off, but where do you also find top-level talents and studios?” asks Film France’s Franck Priot. “France has both. And we can do 3D.”

Film France and the French Embassy are promoting the talents and creations of the French animation industry at a special event open to the Los Angeles animation community on April 15 at 6:45 p.m. at Raleigh Studios, 5300 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90038. To attend, RSVP by email to rsvp@filmfrance.net.

Help Pres Romanillos

Animation veteran Pres Romanillos (Shan-Yu in Mulan, Little Creek in Spirit, Prince Naveen in Princess and the Frog) is currently awaiting a bone marrow transplant for a relapse of leukemia. Industry friends are organizing both a live art auction in LA and an online auction at Pres-Aid.com. They’ve also started a Facebook page to keep folks posted on the plans.

Our friend, animation journalist and FPS magazine founder Emru Townsend, lost his battle against leukemia a couple years ago and he had a lot of difficulty finding a donor. His website HealEmru.com remains a solid resource for learning how easy it is to become a bone marrow donor.

The animation industry may grow over time, but the community remains smaller than one might think. Case in point: last weekend at MoCCA, I chatted with Pres’s nephew Aleth, who can draw his ass off by the way, and I’d never known they were related until now. Whether you choose to support the auction, become a bone marrow donor, or send well wishes his way, in a tight-knit community like ours, it makes a real difference when we pull together to help each other out. And thankfully, we always do.

BYU Continues Its Reign on Animated Student Emmys

BYU’s animation program seems to have the secret sauce that wins the Student Emmys, otherwise known as the College Television Awards. Last year, Pajama Gladiators and Kites took home awards, and this year Carson McKay (who is now at DreamWorks) snagged a statue for X-ing, his CG-animated short. Below is a clip-assembly for the film.

Boomerang Runs "Captain Planet" Marathon for Earth Day on April 17, 2010

Boomerang will offer a 12-hour marathon of Captain Planet to celebrate Earth Day this Saturday, April 17, 2010, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (Eastern), kicking off with the two-part episode "Summit to Save Earth."

The full press release follows:

Boomerang Celebrates Earth Day with 12-Hour Captain Planet Marathon

Cheer “Go Planet!” with 27 Episodes of Groundbreaking Series on Saturday, April 17 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Based on an idea from environmental activist and media mogul Ted Turner, Captain Planet and the Planeteers has educated youth and adults alike about environmental issues and ways to help the planet since its debut in 1990. In observance of Earth Day, Boomerang, Turner Broadcasting System’s commercial-free home of classic animation, will present a 12-hour Captain Planet marathon on April 17. The Earth Day celebration will begin at 8 a.m. (ET) with the two-part episode “Summit to Save Earth”.

Captain Planet follows the adventures of five young Planeteers from five different continents as they fight to save our planet from a variety of polluting perpetrators. Using magic rings given to them by Gaia, the spirit of the earth, these five teenagers each possess supernatural powers—Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart—that when combined summon Captain Planet to prevent environmental disasters and save the world.

“This series is a fun way to show children that our planet is important and we need to take care of it,” says Stacy Isenhower, senior vice president of programming and scheduling for Cartoon Network and Boomerang. “Showing a marathon of Captain Planet to celebrate Earth Day is our way of supporting that mentality.”

Highlights of the Captain Planet marathon include:

“Summit to Save Earth” - 8 a.m.: After corrupted world leaders go back on their word about proposed ecological legislation, the Planeteers fight to save Gaia (Whoopi Goldberg), who has been transformed into a human, before it is too late.

“An Eye For An Eye” - 11:45 a.m.: The villainous Hoggish Greedly (Ed Asner) attempts to wipe out all the world’s dolphins, so the Planeteers call upon Captain Planet to save the species.

“’Teers in the Hood” - 2:15 p.m.: The Planeteers try to put an end to a cycle of violence and bring a message of peace after Gi’s friend is almost killed in a gang war.

“Jail House Flock” - 5:35 p.m.: After Hoggish Greedly (Ed Asner) sneakily obtains a permit to build houses near wetlands, Captain Planet and the Planeteers are framed and thrown in jail.

“Disoriented Express” - 7:15 p.m.: The evil Dr. Blight (Meg Ryan) attempts to prevent a smog-reducing railway system in over-crowded Latin American cities and only Captain Planet can stop her.

Technology Keeps Marching

Over the past several weeks and months, various production board artists have shown me the wonders of their Toon Boom and Cintiq systems.

Not only can artists draw on various levels, store character and different poses, but they can drop the voice tracks into the program and build their own digital story reels (or animatics, as they're known far and wide.) IT-enquirer summarizes it thusly:

Toon Boom Storyboard Pro has Animatics and Final Cut Pro Integration

... In Toon Boom Storyboard Pro ... the animatics phase [now] happens simultaneously with the storyboarding phase, resulting in time savings.

When you read the words "time savings," they are often synonyms for "worker displacement" ...

With animatics, that often seems to be the case. Timing and animation directors have complained for years about animatics encroaching on their territory. And for years I've derided animatics as a crutch for executives who couldn't decipher story and production boards.

But last year I woke up and inhaled the metallic aroma of the newer, digital technology, and figured out it was permanent. (I'm a slow learner.)

At this point in animation history, it's as pointless to rail about animatics as it was -- fifty years back -- to yell about Xeroxed cells. Animatics are embedded deep in the animation landscape, and they're not going away. A few animated shows don't use them, but for 95% (or more) of the industry, animatics are ubiquitous.

The challenge is to employ animatics without driving quality into the toilet, because there's a number of producers starting to wonder what they need timing and slugging directors for when they can simply ship animatics -- created by computers and production board artists -- to a sub-contractor and let the magic happen. But as a veteran television cartoon director told me:

"They can ship animatics to an outside studio, but if they don't have a detailed breakdown of exactly what they want, then when the studio sends the finished work back and the producer and director don't like it, the home studio is going to be on the hook for paying for changes. Because the sub-contractor will say: 'Hey, we did it just the way you told us to, dude. You want us to rework scenes, you'll have to pay more money.'"

Based on past experience, the route this latest development will travel is:

1) Studio, in quest to streamline and save money, has production board artists build animatics in the computer. (Buh bye, animatics editors.)

2) Studio ships animatics to sub-contractor. Sub-contractor produces finished product from the digital story reel.

3) Studio gets work back, decides the show doesn't gel the way it expected, that the quality is off, and complains to sub-contractor.

4) Fight ensues over who pays for what re-takes. Sub-contractor says it did things just the way it was instructed. Studio ends up throwing more money at fixes on the back-end.

5) After paying the extra bills, studio decides to:

A) Have more poses in boards. (Extra work for artists! Same tight schedules!)
B) Have show-runner give more notes to sub-contractor.
C) Have exposure sheets done (and bringing us, of course, full circle.)

Now. Do I know this is the way all the scenarios will play out? Of course not. (CG shows, I'm told, already have a number of built-in controls. They know shipping a plain-vanilla animatic with nothing else doesn't work real well.) But the lesson I draw from these latest developments is that the industry will continue to change as new technologies come on-line. And for animation workers, that will mean adapting to the newer realities to remain employed.

Not exactly wonderful, but this playlet has happened before. Just ask all the inkers who found themselves displaced by Xerox five decades ago.

Joss Whedon To Rewrite 'Avengers' Script

Following yesterday's report that Joss Whedon is in final negotiations to direct "The Avengers" feature film, numerous outlets have confirmed the initial story with one more critical piece of new information coming to light.

According to Variety, Whedon will also rewrite the script for "The Avengers" based on Zak Penn's previous draft. Penn has a long history of adapting Marvel's properties into films, having worked on "X2," "X-Men: The Last Stand," "Electra" and "The Incredible Hulk" in addition to video game scripts for "X-Men: The Official Game" and "Fantastic Four."

However, Whedon also has a long association with Marvel, stemming from his four-year run with artist John Cassaday on "Astonishing X-Men" and a six-issue stint on "Runaways" with Michael Ryan. Whedon is also well known for his many genre TV series, including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly" and "Dollhouse," along with the internet sensation, "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog."

Whedon's previous directorial credits include a recent episode of "Glee," as well as episodes of "The Office," "Buffy," "Angel" and "Firefly." Whedon made his feature film directorial debut in 2005 with "Serenity," a sci-fi western that continued the storyline from the "Firefly" TV series.

Whedon has also been previously attached to write and direct a "Wonder Woman" movie before departing the project in 2007 over creative differences.

Earlier this month, Whedon was also rumored to be a contender to helm the "Runaways" movie, which ultimately went to director Peter Sollett.

"The Avengers" will assemble in theaters on May 4, 2012, with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Jon Favreau Says Black Widow Will 'Keep People Guessing' In 'Iron Man 2'

Last week, "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau described how his latest film would avoid "multi-villainitis," by inserting the new characters into the pre-existing relationships of the first film. For example, Scarlett Johansson's enigmatic Black Widow will come between Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and his long-time confidant, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).

And while it's not currently clear if the Black Widow will be villainous or a heroic character within the movie, Favreau believes the ambiguity is an important part of her appeal.

"She is not what she presents herself as but I don't want to say more," related Favreau during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. "It's fun to keep people guessing. Part of the comics is the mystery surrounding character and then the sexual dynamic but also the cold-blooded efficiency like the spider."

The Black Widow (a.k.a. Natasha Romanoff) was created by Stan Lee, Don Rico and artist Don Heck as Russian spy after Iron Man's secrets in 1964, at the height of the Cold War. She eventually defected to the United States and become one of the top S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as well as a long-time member of The Avengers.

According to Favreau, Johannson was so eager to portray the Black Widow that she dyed her hair red for her initial meeting with him.

"She's the best," said Favreau. "You forget how young she is when you deal with her because she is such a smart woman. I get why Woody Allen has worked with her so many times because she is such a smart, smart woman. She asks the right questions, she got that intelligence, but she's also very trusting in a director. And she busted her butt training."

"Iron Man 2" will drop into theaters on May 7th.

'Kick-Ass' Stars And Their Costumes: Looking Like A Green Condom, But Feeling Bad-Ass!

Put yourself in "Kick-Ass" stars Aaron Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse's shoes for a minute — wouldn't you feel a little bit awkward wearing a green wetsuit or a massive, red-streaked wig?

Speaking with MTV News, the actors revealed their own mixed feelings on wearing superhero costumes in director Matthew Vaughn's "Kick-Ass." Mintz-Plasse said that he felt like a "badass" the first time he saw himself in Red Mist's black-and-red duds — until he realized that other people would be looking at him as well.

"I felt badass, but then I thought, what is the world going to think of me?" he laughed. "They've only seen me in 'Superbad' and 'Role Models,' and I'm kind of a silly guy. Are they going to take me seriously in this? I'm hoping that that happens — we'll see!"

Johnson, on the other hand, loved how ridiculous his costume looked, since it helped him get into the mindset of the titular crime-fighter.

"I really enjoyed ... the idea of this kid being sort of unique and original, and he thinks he's really cool," he said. "I loved it. The more ridiculous I looked, the better, you know? I always think that I looked like a green gummy bear."

"A green condom," Mintz-Plasse corrected him, eliciting an agreeing laugh out of Johnson.

"It was a good laugh," Johnson said of wearing the Kick-Ass suit. "I really enjoyed it."

Bad News/Bad News On Lobo And The Green Hornet

Lobo is one of those comic book properties that has to be done right or it's going to come out like Roger Corman's Fantastic Four. Which is actually an insult to that movie now that I think about it because it was certainly better than the first FF movie a few years ago.

IESB is reporting that the movie is hitting the proverbial comic book wall:

The trouble reared its head when Guy Ritchie jumped ship to helm the Sherlock Holmes sequel later this year. Reportedly, all he could see was big-fat dollar signs after the Robert Downey Jr./Jude Law headlining action/adventure held its ground against biggest movie ever Avatar and earned $515 million worldwide. The real issue at hand is several of the top WB executives (the ones who matter) have lost faith in Akiva Goldman's producorial skills. This is a direct result of their not-so-hot reaction to The Losers and especially Jonah Hex.

I don't know what movie the WB execs saw in The Losers but that was a great movie. I loved it. Tons of actions, had a really good comic book feel to it and I'm hoping they do a sequel.

As far as Green Hornet? Reports are that the movie is pretty bad. Really? A movie where Seth Rogan is playing The Green Hornet is rumored to be bad?

Here's what IESB is saying about that one:

What we're hearing is the Sony executives are displeased with the results. The tone is too campy, they're not happy with the work from director Michel Gondry and Seth Rogen does not look the part. At all. In fact, the feeling at Sony is the movie is a disaster.

Click HERE to read the entire article.

I'll hold off on judgement for Green Hornet. I haven't seen the film yet so for all I know it could kick ass. What I do know it shouldn't be going up against Tron: Legacy. That's a battle Sony won't win that box office weekend. Green Hornet should have tried for a summer release. But who knows, stranger things have happened. I know I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Iron Man USB Jump Drive: 4GB of Tiny Tony Stark Storage

We can't all have arc reactors or computer butlers—yet. But I may be willing to settle for a tiny Iron Man USB jump drive in the meantime. Adorable? Check. Collectible? Check. Affordable? Er...

As much as I want to entrust my valuable files (okay, okay, not so valuable) to Tony Stark, $40 is a pretty steep asking price for 4GB. Throw in a working repulsor ray, Disney Store. Then we'll talk.

'Kick-Ass' Star Is Still A Scaredy-Cat (But She Can Beat Up Christopher Mintz-Plasse)

Chloe Moretz may know how to jump between rooftops, slice criminals with swords, and kick some serious mafia butt as Hit-Girl in Matthew Vaughn's "Kick-Ass," but the 13-year-old actress said she's still just a teenage age girl when it comes to real-life combat.

In an interview with MTV News, Moretz said that if anyone confronts her she won't challenge them to a brutal fight like her "Kick-Ass" alter ego.

"I'm still a scaredy-cat," Moretz said. "Literally, anyone stands up to me I will freakout and call 911."

But before the interview, Moretz exchanged playful blows with co-star Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who plays Red Mist in the film.

"I know when she's going to attack me, and I'm aware of that," Mintz-Plasse said of the only real combat skill he learned during filming.

Explaining away her playful wrestling with Mintz-Plasse, she said she hits him because he's like a brother — and when she beats up her brothers, they're not afraid to hit back.

"I will not hit you," Mintz-Plasse said. "I will not hit a child. I mean a teenager, I'm sorry."

"He's scary," Moretz joked Moretz.

The first real Cylon to be made by ... General Motors??

Let's mark this date, when the first real-life precursor to the Cylons that will destroy humanity first took shape in the form of a robot astronaut created by NASA and ... General Motors.

Both humans and robots have explored the final frontier, but for the first time a human-like robot is going to be sent into space to aid the astronauts on the International Space Station.

Known as Robonaut 2 (or, endearingly, R2), the two-armed 'bot is the result of a venture by NASA and General Motors and will help the researchers involved identify in what ways a robot could be a help to human explorers in space. Before it gets to go on its first spacewalk, however, it'll be monitored to see how well it deals with weightlessness.

Libraries: LOTS of people want the Twilight books banned

Stephenie Meyer

Not everyone loves Stephenie Meyer's mega-best-selling Twilight series of books, and not for the usual reasons: The series ranks fifth on the annual report of "challenged books" released Wednesday by the American Library Association.

The Associated Press says that Meyer's in good company: J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books are also high on that list, which represents concerns by people who don't want children to see them.

Why?

Meyer's stories of vampires and teen romance have been criticized for sexual content; a library association official also thinks that the "Twilight" series reflects general unease about supernatural stories.

"Vampire novels have been a target for years and the `Twilight' books are so immensely popular that a lot of the concerns people have had about vampires are focused on her books," says Barbara Jones, director of the association's Office for Intellectual Freedom.

Christian groups for years have protested the themes of wizardry in Rowling's books, which don't appear on the current top 10.

The number-one most challenged series in 2009 was Lauren Myracle's IM series, which are told through instant messages, which have been criticized for nudity, language and drug references.

The ALA recorded 460 challenges in 2009, a drop from 513 the year before, and 81 books actually being removed.

We can think of a bunch of other reasons why Twilight books should be burned. What do you think?

Iron Man 2 International Posters And Easter Egg Info

Seems like everyday I have to post four stories on Iron Man 2. Which is weird because Paramount could be saving a lot of money by not bothering with any of this because the movie will make a ton of dough once it's released regardless.

Let's start off with this extra scene thing that seems to be popular amongst the Marvel movies. If you'll recall from the first Iron Man, Nick Fury strolled into Tony's place (he really needs a better security system) and talked about forming a team. In The Incredible Hulk, he met with General Ross about a new team he's putting together. (The Incredible Hulk takes place AFTER Iron Man 1 and 2 according to Jon Favreau, so the extra scene in Hulk must mean Tony already has most of The Avengers assembled.)

Now what can we expect as the extra scene for Iron Man 2? Reader Andrea, who runs the Italian website badtaste.it, sent this to us:

There is a very juicy news about Iron Man 2 on BadTaste today.
A 100% trusted source (NOT from the production/distribution, but very familiar with the movie) confirmed us today that there will be an easter egg in IM2. It's an extra scene, just like the one in the first movie, after the end credits. We are able to tell you what's about! It's a scene about... Captain America and Thor! Maybe this doesn't seem a big reveal, but it's nice to have a confirmation.

If you can read italian, here you can read the news. It says exactly what I told you, and adds that in Italy the name
"Avengers" will be translated "Progetto Vendicatori" in Iron Man 2 (yes, there will be
some chatter about the avengers in the movie!)...

If you can read Italian, click HERE to check it out.

Moving on from the Italians to the French, more international posters have been released. These are simply posters that we've already seen but with different backgrounds. Silly French can't do anything right!
